Traveling Alone Through Europe

Many years ago, during my last summer of university, I decided to travel to Europe alone. My goal was to spend 3 months in Ireland working and then go north through Scandinavia. I started in London and then took the train to Wales where I picked up a boat to Ireland. I spent only one month in Ireland due to the IRA violence that was going on throughout the island that summer. I used my train pass to get from place to place. I crisscrossed the country staying overnight in various youth hostels and bed & breakfasts. After one month I decided it was time to travel to Scandinavia. I had a Europass for the trains and I made full use of it. I spent a couple of days in Copenhagen, took the train north, above the Arctic Circle where I experienced the midnight sun, and then across the top of Scandinavia and back into Copenhagen via Helsinki, Stockholm and Goteborg. I have to say I was very proud of myself for accomplishing this great trip all on my own. I missed companionship from time to time but, on the other side of the coin, I never had to compromise on things I wanted to see and do. My family and friends were very impressed by my accomplishment. I was only 21 years old.

I traveled with my family from the age of seven. My mother loved to visit new places and experience different cultures. She instilled that curiosity in me.
